Alcohol and Menopause

Alcohol and Menopause: Yay or Nay.

31 de August, 2023Julieta A

We have discussed this plenty before BUT as we well know by now, as we age, we start to experience some of the consequences of menopause.  Ranging from hormonal changes, hot flashes, mood swings, night sweats, and insomnia. While each woman's experience is unique, there are certain factors that can impact the journey through menopause.  One of the ways we have learned to cope during menopause is through the assistance of alcohol. It's often surprising to many that consuming alcohol, during menopause, may actually make menopausal symptoms worse. Let's discuss this further to find out more about alcohol and menopause and discover healthy ways to navigate through both.

What happens to our body during menopause?

As a we experience menopause, hormonal changes take hold, and the levels of estrogen in our body begin to decline. Menopause is marked by irregular periods, hot flashes, and mood swings, as these hormone levels change. Many women opt for alcohol to numb these symptoms, even though it can have some adverse outcomes.  Alcohol acts as a vasodilator, causing blood vessels to expand and potentially triggering hot flashes. Additionally, alcohol's impact on sleep quality can worsen the sleep disturbances already common during menopause.  I personally find that when I drink I tend to wake up several times during the night and my sleep tends to be more restless than when I don't drink.

Alcohol can interfere with hormone levels, particularly estrogen. During menopause, estrogen levels naturally decrease, leading to various changes in the body. Excessive alcohol consumption can further disrupt hormone balance, potentially contributing to bone density loss and an increased risk of osteoporosis.

How alcohol intake affects the body during menopause

Consuming alcohol during menopause comes with a range of effects. The fluctuation in hormones causes a different and more profound effect when alcohol enters into your bloodstream causing hot flashes, night sweats, and irritability to worsen. Moreover, alcohol can lead to dehydration, which can cause dryness, skin aging, and dry hair during menopause.

The risks associated with alcohol consumption during menopause.

Many women believe that drinking wine or beer helps them relax and sleep better, which can be true, but here are a few points to note when thinking about alcohol and menopause:

1  Alcohol can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer in women who drink more than one drink daily.
2  Drinking alcohol regularly can lead to weight gain. Menopausal women already have enough challenges with weight gain due to the change in estrogen levels.
3  Alcohol can lead to more extensive mood swings, depression, and anxiety during menopause.

Moderate Alcohol Consumption

While it's advisable to limit alcohol consumption during menopause, moderation can be key. Opt for beverages with lower alcohol content, such as light regular beers or cocktails with minimal alcohol. Reducing alcohol intake can help minimize the impact on hot flashes and sleep quality.

Instead of reaching for alcohol, we might consider healthy and effective ways to manage the symptoms of menopause. There are other means like exercise, getting enough sleep, reducing stress levels, a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and finding social support.

Red Wine Vs White Wine

The red wine versus white wine debate has been ongoing for years. When it comes to menopause, both types of wine have potential benefits and drawbacks. Red wine contains antioxidants like resveratrol, which has been linked to heart health. However, it also contains histamines that might trigger allergic reactions or worsen symptoms like hot flashes. On the other hand, white wine typically has fewer histamines, but it lacks the same level of antioxidants found in red wine.

Ultimately, the impact of alcohol during menopause varies from person to person. Factors such as genetics, overall health, and lifestyle choices play a significant role in a woman's health. Engaging in regular exercise, maintaining a balanced diet rich in nutrients, and staying hydrated are essential practices for managing menopausal symptoms effectively.

Alcohol and menopause, do not always go well together. During menopause, the body has enough challenges, and alcohol can make them worse, which in turn can lead to more complications. As you journey into menopause, remember that there are healthier ways to manage menopausal symptoms successfully. Exercise, healthy eating, rest, support, and minimizing your alcohol intake can help you to stay balanced and focused on enjoying this exciting new stage of your life.

Opting for lower-alcohol beverages and being aware of how different types of alcohol might affect you can help you navigate this transitional phase with greater ease. As with any health-related matter, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable to determine the best approach for your individual needs.
